602LAN SUITE 2004.0.07.0305 Released
602LAN SUITE 2004.0.07.0305 is now available. This update is free for all previous 2004 customers. Here is a list of new features and fixes:
- Added the ability to try the built-in Anti-virus features and create unlimited users with the 30-day trial.
- Added new anti-spam DNS blacklist services (DNSBL) and removed some of the obsolete DNSBL services.
- Added support for the Windows Vista operating system.
- Updated the 602LAN SUITE Content Filter engine based on the latest PureSight 3.6.8 SDK.
- Increased the speed of the 602LAN SUITE Content Filter by 20% due to optimizations in the internal PureSight engine.
- Removed the old legacy log files (W3CA.log, W3CP.log, W3CC.log, W3CNAT.log, FW.log).
- Fixed an SMTP syntax issue that would not accept an attachment with Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit (server responds: 501 Bad syntax).
- Fixed an incorrect parameter returned by the proxy that caused Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 to not work correctly with the Content Filter.
- Removed the ability to register the free 5 user version.
- Removed support for integration with AVG Anti-virus.

Sounds like a useful enhancement to the product. We’ve used the w3cp.log in concert with a reporting tool to report use. What files replace these and where are they located?
Dave, the legacy log files (W3CA.log, W3CP.log, W3CC.log, W3CNAT.log, FW.log) are located in the 602LAN SUITE root installation directory. We just added MMDDYY to the filename (e.g. W3CP.log is now W3CP031207.log for today) so they will be rotated just like the main log file.
Why can’t users of the free 5-user version register anymore, don’t you want to keep track of who uses your software? Removing AVG support is a bad thing in my opinion as this leaves users of the free 5-user version out in the cold as far as virus protection is concerned. This measure is not exactly friendly for home users of your product. Where’s that user-friendly Software602 company?
Jan, our decision to remove support for AVG from our product was based on increasing technical difficulties and unsatisfactory detection ratios provided by AVG. Please take at look at our included anti-virus protection powered by BitDefender. Also, please take a look at this article that shows a test performed by PC World comparing BitDefender to other anti-virus vendors.
If I previously installed 602LAN SUITE 2004 (2004.0.05.0803) and am not planning to re-register the software in the future, can I still continue use this software for commercial use?
Ng, the software license agreement was not changed, so you can continue using it. Just understand that support for the freeware version has ended. That means we cannot help you with any problems and you cannot re-register the free version. I would highly recommend you look into purchasing a commercial license if you are seriously using the software in your organization.
We are currently running Winproxy as firewall and gateway, anti virus, anti spam web filter and spyware protection, I would consider changing if the non-support for multiple processors or processors with hyper threading has been resolved?
Dale, hyperthread and multi-processor support was added on June 27, 2005 with 602LAN SUITE build 2004.0.05.0623.
With AVG integration gone, your software has become to expensive to use. Your antivirus renewal rates are expensive. I have a customer who purchased the 100 users 602LAN SUITE. You want an unfair amount to renew the anti-virus protection. We will be moving to a diferrent solution such as Merak on Linux with Squid as the proxy.
Bill, I am sorry you feel this way, but after analyzing the pricing on the AVG website, I found the following: AVG Email Server Edition for 100 users for 1 year is $858 (compared to 602LAN SUITE $899). Renewal pricing for AVG is up to 50% off the end-user price, which will make the renewal approximately $429 (compared to 602LAN SUITE $500). In our opinion, the better detection rates of BitDefender combined with the features of 602LAN SUITE are worth the extra $50-$70.
Currently using the free 5 user version, what happens when I download and install the latest version, will it stop working after the free 30-day period, and will I be forced to buy?
Pim, if you install this version over your registered free 5-user version it will be converted into a 30-day trial, and you will need to purchase the commerical license to continue use after 30-days.
AVG Professional ($49) installed on the PC hosting 602LAN SUITE is all that is needed to provide virus protection for my 100 user network. You have raised the cost of my AV renewal by 10 times.
Bill, AVG Professional is for desktop anti-virus protection only. AVG Email Server Edition is required to protect your e-mail server. Make sure you read the Licensing FAQs on Grisoft’s webpage so you will not be in violation of their license agreement.
