Block access to specific file types using the blacklist included with the 602LAN SUITE Content Filter proxy server

602LAN SUITE Content Filter provides a powerful blacklist feature that allows you to specify what file types a user can or cannot access through the proxy server. This can be used to help protect your network from being infected with viruses from a web download, but can also be helpful to prevent users from wasting time downloading unauthorized files such as music, videos and other software.

Block file types for the entire network

In many cases it might be advantageous to block the entire network from accessing a particular file type through the proxy. The example below shows how this can be done:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE, click Settings and then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Content Filter tab.
  3. Enable the Content Filter, there should be a checkmark in the Check HTTP proxy requests with the Content Filter checkbox.
  4. Click the Blacklist Rules tab and then the Add Rule button.
  5. Click the Add button, then type *.exe in the URL field and click OK.
  6. Click Add Hosts, and select Any address from the list and click OK.
  7. Click OK and then click Save to save your settings.

NOTE: If you would like to add more extensions, you may repeat step 5 for each extension you wish to block. Each extension will need to be listed individually in the URL field.

Block file types for a specific user

Sometimes you may want to block specific users from accessing specific content. For example, you may wish to block access to .exe files for everyone except employees from your IT department. The example provided below shows how to add a specific user to the blacklist rule that requires proxy authentication. To block a specific user from accessing an .exe file, do the following:

  1. From the Blacklist Rules tab, click the Add Rule button.
  2. Click the Add button, then type *.exe in the URL field. Click OK.
  3. Click Add Users and select a user you wish to block.
  4. Click OK and then click Save to save your settings.

Content Filter Block Users

NOTE: You can add more users by repeating step 3 and more extensions by repeating step 2.

If you are not using proxy authentication, you can add IP addresses to the rule by doing the following:

  1. From the Blacklist Rules tab, click the Add Rule button.
  2. Click the Add button, then type *.exe in the URL field and click OK.
  3. Click Add Hosts and select Single address or Address in IP range.
  4. Enter the IP address or range and click OK.
