Configure 602LAN SUITE and Outlook Express to filter spam

Spam is a growing problem for anyone that uses e-mail. A typical mail server can receive thousands of these messages every day, causing your employees to waste time deleting these unwanted messages. 602LAN SUITE 2004 with Bayesian spam filter, can analyze and identify spam for you. Once spam has been identified, an Outlook Express mail rule can sort the spam into a specific folder.

Configuring the Bayesian filter

To turn on the Bayesian anti-spam filter in 602LAN SUITE and configure it to add a spam identifier to the subject line of the e-mail, follow these steps:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE 2004, then click Settings and then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Anti-spam tab.
  3. Click to add a checkmark in the Enable Bayesian analysis to check incoming messages checkbox.
  4. In the If classified as Junk E-mail section, click the Send to user radio button.
  5. Click to add a checkmark to the Add the following subject text to Junk E-mail: checkbox.
  6. Click Save to save your settings.

Training the Bayesian filter

Your Bayesian anti-spam filter is now active and ready to be trained. To do this, simply forward messages that you feel are spam to junk@junk.junk. This will teach the Bayesian filter that these messages are junk and you DO NOT want to receive these types of messages in the future. In order for the Bayesian filter to function properly, you will also need to forward good messages to a different e-mail address. To do this, forward good messages to notjunk@junk.junk to teach the Bayesian filter that these messages are not junk and that you DO want to receive these types of messages in the future. Please note that at least 100 junk and 100 not junk messages must be trained before the Bayesian filter will begin to rate incoming messages. See this article for more information regarding the configuration of the Bayesian filter.

Configuring Outlook Express to sort spam

The following example is specific to Outlook Express, but most current e-mail clients support mail rules for e-mail sorting. If 602LAN SUITE classifies an e-mail as Junk it will, by default, add the following string to the subject: –SPAM–. To sort this message to a specific folder, a mail rule must be configured in Outlook Express:

  1. A new mail folder must be created to sort the Junk E-mail into. Click File - New - Folder… and give the new folder the name Junk E-mail.
  2. Click Tools - Message Rules - Mail…
  3. Enable the condition Where the subject line contains specific words.
  4. Click the contains specific words link in the Rule Description box.
  5. Enter the phrase –SPAM–, click Add then click OK.
  6. Now Enable the action Move it to the specified folder.
  7. Click the specified link in the Rule Description box.
  8. Select the Junk E-mail folder just created, then click OK.
  9. Enter the Name of the rule: 602LAN SUITE Junk E-mail.
  10. Click OK, then OK again.
