Secure your e-mail communication with SSL

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. This means that when you enable SSL for your e-mail, all of your e-mail transmissions are encrypted to provide additional security and protect your privacy. SSL is the same technology used to protect your credit card information when you order goods and services from the Internet. To learn more about SSL click here.

To enable SSL for your e-mail, do the following:

  1. Open LAN SUITE 2002 and click on Settings - Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the SSL tab.
  3. Fill out the fields like the example shown below (NOTE: The common name should be the name of the server — ex. 192.168.1.1 or secure.yourdomain.com).
  4. Choose your Key length, a longer key means a stronger and more secure server. If you choose a longer key length, it will take a slightly longer time to access as the stronger encryption takes additional time to encode and decode.
  5. Select your State or Province.
  6. Click on Create a Self-signed Certificate.
  7. Once the certificate has been created, go to the POP3 tab and check the SSL POP3 server selection.
  8. Now click the SMTP tab and check the SSL SMTP server selection.
  9. Click Save.

SSL Tab

NOTE: If you already have a Signed Certificate for your SSL web server, then the same certificate will be used for SSL e-mail.

You must now configure your e-mail client to access the secure POP3 and SMTP server. Below are the instructions for Microsoft Outlook Express.

Outlook Express Setup

  1. Click on Tools - Accounts.
  2. Select your Mail account, then click Properties.
  3. On the Advanced tab, check both boxes that say This server requires SSL.
  4. Change the SMTP port to 2525.
  5. Make sure the POP3 port is 995.
  6. Click OK.

Outlook Express 6 - Advanced

Now you will be able to send and receive e-mail and all your client-to-server communication is encrypted.

Any standard POP3 e-mail client with SSL support can be used with LAN SUITE.
