Use Mapped Links to allow VNC access to and from your LAN computers

The Mapped Links feature in 602Pro LAN SUITE 2003 provides the ability to connect machines on the local network through the proxy server. Mapped Links can also be used to provide support for applications that do not support a proxy server.

Allow VNC access to a LAN computer from the Internet

VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is remote control software that allows you to view and interact with one computer using a simple program on another computer anywhere on the Internet. This application is useful for administrators who need to access a server remotely or even in a helpdesk environment where support staff needs to see what the user is seeing. To configure VNC to access the remote computer, you will need to do the following:

  1. Open 602Pro LAN SUITE, click Settings and then click Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Proxy tab, then click the Mapped Links tab.
  3. Fill out the form as follows:

    Protocol: TCP
Connection from Client: IP address: 0.0.0.0
    IP Mask: 0.0.0.0
To this computer: IP address: (Choose your WAN/Internet interface)
    Port: 5900
Map to: Host Address: IP address of the target computer (e.g. 192.168.66.1)
    Port: 5900

This configuration will allow anyone from the Internet to connect through LAN SUITE to the computer defined in the Map to: Host Address: field. You can easily specify a single IP address to allow connections from by changing the Connection from Client: IP address: to the remote IP address and 255.255.255.255 for the IP Mask: field. To connect to the VNC server behind LAN SUITE, you would simply connect to the public IP address of the LAN SUITE server.

Mapped Links - In

NOTE: You can specify multiple computers to connect to on the LAN from a remote site by incrementing the port number. For example, the second computer would be on port 5901. To connect to the second server, you would simply connect to IP address:1 (e.g. 10.23.45.67:1) where the IP address is the public IP address of the LAN SUITE server.

Allow VNC access from the LAN to a remote computer on the Internet

Probably the most common scenario would be the need to access a computer on a remote network. This, too requires a mapped link, as VNC does not support a proxy server. Follow these directions to map a link to a VNC server on the Internet:

  1. Open 602Pro LAN SUITE, click on Settings and then click Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Proxy tab and then click the Mapped Links tab.
  3. Fill out the form as follows:

    Protocol: TCP
Connection from Client: IP address: 0.0.0.0
    IP Mask: 0.0.0.0
To this computer: IP address: (Choose your LAN interface)
    Port: 5900
Map to: Host Address: Public IP address of remote computer
    Port: 5900

Now, to access this VNC server, you would simply need to connect your VNC viewer to the LAN SUITE server!

Mapped Links - Out

NOTE: Mapped Links work with virtually any application or service that does not provide support for a proxy server. Please note that we can not assist you with setting up third party applications to work through LAN SUITE. If you have trouble setting up any third party application, you are welcome to ask a question in our Support Forums.
