Use proxy authentication and 602LAN SUITE Content Filter to provide multiple levels of filtering

Each organization requires multiple levels of Internet access control. The 602LAN SUITE Content Filter combined with proxy authentication will give you fine grain access to web content filtering. This tip will explore three different access types: no filtering, dynamic content filtering and whitelist only.

Step #1: Create Users

To create a user in 602LAN SUITE, follow these steps:

  1. In 602LAN SUITE, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Users tab.
  3. Click the Add button, then enter the user information as normal.
  4. Make sure that the right User may use proxy is enabled.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Save to save your settings.

Step #2: Configure the Proxy Server

Once the users have been created, the proxy must be enabled and configured to require authentication. Do the following to enable the proxy:

  1. In 602LAN SUITE, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Proxy tab.
  3. Enable the HTTP/HTTPS/HTTP-FTP proxy option.
  4. Enable the Authentication required option.
  5. Click Save to save your settings.

Step #3: Configure the Content Filter

Now the Content Filter must be enabled and configured to begin dynamic filtering of all access through the proxy server. Do the following to enable the Content Filter and start dynamic filtering:

  1. In 602LAN SUITE, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Content Filter tab.
  3. Enable the Check HTTP proxy requests with the Content Filter option.
  4. Click the Add rule button.
  5. Select the specific categories you would like to block. If you would like to block all 22 categories, simply click the Check all button.
  6. Click the Add Hosts button, select Any address, then click OK.
  7. Click OK, then Save to save your settings.

Step #4: Configure the Whitelist Rules

Whitelist rules override all other rules in the Content Filter (dynamic filtering and blacklist rules). The first rule will allow the user PRESIDENT to visit ANY website, while the second rule will only allow the user SECRETARY to visit the websites listed. Do the following:

  1. In 602LAN SUITE, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Content Filter tab, then the Whitelist Rules sub-tab.
  3. Click Add Rule, then Add, and type “*” (no quotes) in the URL field. Now click OK.
  4. Click Add Users and select PRESIDENT from the list, then click OK.
  5. Click Add Rule, then Add, and enter the URLs that you want to allow for this user (e.g. *.ups.com, *.fedex.com). Now click OK.
  6. Click Add Users and select SECRETARY from the list, then click OK.
  7. Click OK, then Save to save your settings.

Content Filter Whitelist

Step #5: Configure the Blacklist Rule

Once the above whitelist rule has been added for the user SECRETARY, a blacklist rule must be added to block all other websites. Do the following:

  1. In 602LAN SUITE, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Content Filter tab, then the Blacklist Rules sub-tab.
  3. Click Add Rule, then Add, and type “*” (no quotes) in the URL field. Now click OK.
  4. Click Add Users and select SECRETARY from the list, then click OK.
  5. Click OK, then Save to save your settings.

Content Filter Blacklist

Summary

User PRESIDENT has no filtering, user SECRETARY can ONLY visit the websites listed in the whitelist rule and ALL OTHER USERS are filtered by the dynamic content filter.
