Use the 602LAN SUITE Content Filter to control access to web mail sites

The popularity and accessibility of integrated web-based e-mail is a problem for organizations wanting to gain complete control over employee communication. This technology allows employees to send confidential information and collect personal e-mail while at work. With the 602LAN SUITE Content Filter add-on, you can protect your organization and increase employee productivity by controlling access to popular web mail sites while still allowing access to approved web mail sites.

Block access to web mail sites

602LAN SUITE’s Content Filter add-on provides the ability to block access to sites from the Web mail category. To block access to this category, follow these directions:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE, click Settings and then click Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Content Filter tab, then the Content Filter Rules sub-tab.
  3. Click the Add Rule button.
  4. Click to add a checkmark to the Web mail check box.
  5. Click the Add hosts button.
  6. Select the any address option from the Define IP Address(es) list, then click OK.
  7. Click OK, then Save to save the changes.

Add Content Filter Rule

Allow access to web mail sites at certain times

602LAN SUITE’s Content Filter add-on provides the ability to define a time period in which a rule will be in effect. For example, you may wish to allow access to web mail sites after normal business hours or during lunch. To allow access during these times, follow these directions:

  1. Click the rule you created in the previous section and click Edit Rule.
  2. Click the button found next to Time schedule.
  3. Click and drag your mouse to color in the days and times you wish for this filter to be active. Since this rule is denying access to the site, the red area denotes when the filter will be disabled (meaning the users will be able to access sites classified by the content filter as Web mail). Green denotes when this filter will be enabled (will
NOT be able to access this type of site).
  4. Click Yes, then OK to save your rule.
  5. Click Save to save the changes.
