Using the Anti-spam feature to effectively reduce junk e-mail
LAN SUITE 2002 provides you with the ability to protect yourself from unwanted junk email also known as SPAM. Please note: to use this feature LAN SUITE MUST be installed on the machine that is hosting your e-mail server (i.e. it is running on the machine that the MX record for your domain is pointing). To enable this feature you must navigate to the SMTP tab under Advanced Configuration. On the SMTP tab, click the button labeled Anti-spam Settings.

Your first option for protection is the use of several DNS-BL or Black List servers. The servers can operate in one of three ways.
- The first type contains a frequently updated list of known spammers. When an e-mail is found to come from one of the known spammers on the list, the mail will be rejected and a notice will be sent to the sender of the e-mail notifying them of the reason the e-mail was rejected. These servers are notated by the keyword SPAM.
- The second type performs what is known as a reverse DNS lookup on the origin of the incoming e-mail. This helps LAN SUITE determine if an e-mail is being sent from a dynamically assigned IP address connection (i.e. dial-up Internet account). Since mail servers typically need a static IP address in order to receive incoming mail, an e-mail that was sent from a dynamic address is more than likely SPAM. The servers that perform this service are notated by the keyword Dial-up.
- The third type contains a list of known open relay servers. This is a list of mail servers that have been positively identified as being available to relay e-mail for anybody who wishes to use them and do not protect themselves against spammers. These servers are notated by the keyword Open relays.

LAN SUITE can check all incoming e-mail against the DNSBL server to see if they fit the profile for SPAM. Any incoming mail found to fit the profile will be rejected and an explanation will be issued to the sender of the e-mail. You only need to check one or two of the servers to substantially cut down the amount of SPAM you receive.
NOTE: Remember that each server you select from the list will increase the processing time for each incoming e-mail due to the fact that the e-mail must be checked against each selected server before being rejected or delivered.
The second method of protection LAN SUITE offers you, is the use of a reject list. The reject list gives you the freedom to refuse e-mail from a domain, a single e-mail address, or a mail server. To add an entry to the reject list, click the Add button and use one of the following formats:
- Block all senders from a domain - Use the * wildcard, followed by “@”, followed by the offending domain (*@spammer.com)
- Block all mail from a particular mail server - Enter the name or IP address of the offending mail sever (mail.spammer.com)
- Block an offending e-mail address - Enter the offending e-mail address that you wish to reject (spam@spammer.com)

NOTE: If you simply enter “spammer.com” the mail may not be successfully rejected due to the fact that most domains will use a separate mail server that has a different address to send mail. A good example is that the domain “spammer.com” may use the server “mail.spammer.com” as its e-mail server. When LAN SUITE parses the header of the message it will see that the mail was sent from “mail.spammer.com” which renders the “spammer.com” entry useless.
