Eliminate proxy server setup, use 602LAN SUITE’s NAT service to simplify Internet sharing

Network Address Translation (NAT) is the easiest Internet sharing technique today. This allows the sharing of a single public IP address across multiple computers by converting multiple private IP addresses into a single public IP address in real time. It supports nearly any Internet applications such as web browsers, FTP clients and mail clients without proxy configuration hassles.

Turning on the NAT server

NAT requires two network interfaces: one being public (the Internet) and the other one private (your local LAN). These devices can be two network cards, a network device like an DSL interface and a network card, or even an analog modem and a network card. To enable the NAT server in 602LAN SUITE, follow these directions:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE 2004, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the NAT tab.
  3. Click to add a checkmark to the Share Internet connections with address translation (NAT) checkbox.
  4. Select your public interface from the Connection to share (WAN/Internet) list, and your private network
interface from the Select internal network (LAN).
  5. Click Save to save your settings.

NOTE: NAT does not currently work with multi-homed networks, multi-processor systems, or hyper-thread processors. We plan to support these configurations in a future version of 602LAN SUITE.

Configuring the client computers

One of the nice things about NAT is that it allows you to use many third party applications by simply configuring TCP/IP in your operating system to utilize 602LAN SUITE as a gateway. Once your computer is configured, nearly any Internet application will work with virtually no configuration! To configure your clients to use NAT, follow these instructions:

  1. Consult your Windows documentation regarding accessing the TCP/IP protocol configuration. Generally, this is done from the “Network” or “Network and Dial-up Connections” Control Panel in Windows.
  2. Change the Default Gateway to use the 602LAN SUITE computer’s internal (LAN) interface.
  3. Add the appropriate DNS server IP addresses to the DNS fields. These should be provided by your ISP.
