Integrate filtered (proxy) and unfiltered (NAT) access with 602LAN SUITE Content Filter

602LAN SUITE Content Filter includes NAT services and an HTTP proxy with content filtering. This provides flexible shared Internet access to your network. Using NAT, you can offer unrestricted access to the Internet, allowing the use of applications that do not support a proxy server. On the other hand, if you have users who only need access to the web, you can configure their web browser to use the HTTP proxy. Both of these network access services can be used at the same time, making it easy to integrate filtered and unfiltered Internet access in your organization.

Enable Network Address Translation (NAT)

NAT is basically a router that passes requests directly to the Internet. The advantage of this technology over a proxy server is that NAT allows the use of applications that do not support a proxy server. The disadvantage is that it does not provide the level of control that an application proxy server provides.

To enable NAT, do the following:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE 2004, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the NAT tab.
  3. Click to check the Share Internet connections with address translation (NAT) checkbox.
  4. Select your public interface from the Connection to share (WAN/Internet) list, and your private network interface from the Select internal network (LAN) list.

Limit Access to Network Address Translation (NAT)

Once the NAT router is enabled, anyone will be able to access the Internet unrestricted. To limit access to the NAT service, the NAT IP Filter can be used to add only the computers you wish to grant access.

To configure the NAT IP Filter, do the following:

  1. From the NAT tab, click the IP Filter sub-tab.
  2. Select Enable Access.
  3. In the Source IP address field, enter the IP address of a machine to which you would like to grant NAT access.
  4. For Source Mask enter 255.255.255.255.
  5. For both Dest. IP address and Dest. mask, enter 0.0.0.0.
  6. Click Add to add your rule.
  7. Repeat the above steps to add each computer that will access NAT to the IP filter.
  8. Click Save to save your settings.

Enable the HTTP Proxy and Content Filter

Once you have defined which users will be allowed to use NAT, it is time to enable the HTTP proxy server for the rest of your network. To enable the HTTP Proxy and Content Filter, do the following:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE 2004, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the Proxy tab.
  3. Click to add a checkmark to the HTTP/HTTPS/HTTP-FTP proxy checkbox.
  4. Click the Content Filter tab.
  5. Click to add a checkmark in the Check HTTP proxy requests with the Content Filter checkbox.
  6. Click the Content Filter Rules tab.
  7. Click the Add rule button.
  8. Select the specific categories you would like to block. If you would like to block all 22 categories, simply click the Check all button.
  9. Click the Add Hosts button, select Any address, then click OK.
  10. Click OK, then Save to save your settings.
