Secure your SMTP and POP3 e-mail communication with 128-bit SSL encryption

With e-mail becoming an indispensable tool for conducting business online, it is important to consider the security issues related to sending private or confidential information via e-mail. Quotes, purchase orders, and sometimes even credit card information is sent via e-mail without even an afterthought as to who may be listening. With 602LAN SUITE easily enable SSL to encrypt all e-mail communication to and from the server.

Configuring the SSL Certificate

The first step to enabling the SSL SMTP/POP3 servers in 602LAN SUITE is to create an SSL certificate. An SSL certificate can either be issued by a Certificate Authority (CA) or can be self-signed. To access the SSL Configuration and create a self-signed certificate, follow these directions:

  1. Open 602LAN SUITE, then click on Settings and click Advanced Configuration.
  2. Click the SSL tab.
  3. Fill out the appropriate SSL information, then click Create Self-signed Cerficiate.
  4. Click Save.

NOTE: If you do not wish to use a self-signed SSL certificate you can also purchase a certificate from a Certificate Authority. You can learn how to use this type of certificate by clicking here.

Enabling the SSL SMTP and POP3 servers

Next, you will need to enable the SSL SMTP and SSL POP3 servers. To do this:

  1. Click Settings then Advanced Configuration in 602LAN SUITE.
  2. Click the SMTP tab.
  3. Click to add a checkmark to the SSL SMTP server checkbox.
  4. Click the POP3 tab.
  5. Click to add a checkmark to the SSL POP3 server checkbox.
  6. Click Save to save your settings.

Enable SSL POP3/SMTP

Your SSL SMTP and POP3 servers are now running on the ports specified. To access your e-mail securely, you will need to configure your e-mail client to access the SMTP and POP3 services via SSL.

Configure Microsoft Outlook Express

To use the SSL SMTP/POP3 server in Microsoft Outlook Express, do the following:

  1. In Microsoft Outlook Express, click Tools, then Accounts.
  2. Click Add, then click Mail….
  3. Enter your full name into the field labeled Display name, then click Next.
  4. Select I already have an e-mail address that I’d like to use, then enter your e-mail address into the field labeled E-mail address and then click Next.
  5. In the drop down list-box, select the server type as POP3 for Incoming Mail server and Outgoing mail server enter the IP address of 602LAN SUITE (e.g. 192.168.1.1), then click Next.
  6. Now input the Account name (a user name from the Users tab in 602LAN SUITE) and Password (for that user), then click Next.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Select the account you just created and click Properties.
  9. Click the Advanced tab.
  10. Click to add a checkmark into both options titled This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  11. Make sure the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port is set to 2525, and the Incoming mail (POP3) port is set to 995.
  12. Click OK.

Outlook Express configuration

Configure Mozilla Thunderbird

To use the SSL SMTP/POP3 server in Mozilla Thunderbird, do the following:

  1. In Mozilla Thunderbird, click Tools, then Account Settings….
  2. Click Add Account….
  3. Select Email account, then click Next.
  4. Enter your full name into the field labeled Your Name, and enter your e-mail address into the field labeled Email Address, then click Next.
  5. Select POP and enter the IP address of 602LAN SUITE for Incoming Server then click Next.
  6. Input the Incoming User Name (a user name from the Users tab in 602LAN SUITE), then click Next.
  7. Enter an Account Name, this will help you identify this account if you have multiple accounts within Thunderbird, then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Click Server Settings under your Account Name you entered previously.
  10. Click to add a checkmark to the option Use secure connection (SSL) and make sure the port is set to 995.
  11. Now click the Outgoing Server (SMTP), enter the IP address of 602LAN SUITE for Server Name, for the Port enter 2525, uncheck Use name and password and select SSL under Use secure connection.
  12. Click OK.
